DESTINATION MAINLAND GREECE

Greece's mainland stretches across more cultures and terrains than any other region in the country. Consequently, it stands slightly apart from the rest of the country, an impression reinforced for visitors by architecture and scenery, customs and climate that seem more Balkan than typically Mediterranean. A Mighty civilizations, including Macedonians, Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, Slavs and Turks, have left traces here. A different face of Greece, really.
In a country so blessed with ancient ruins, islands and beaches, people tend to forget about Greece's mountains as a holiday option. The mountainous regions of mainland Greece are little known among visitors heading to Athens and the islands, but amid their mountains, canyons and ancient villages are superb hiking trails, serene lakes and lush forests.
It is home of the fantastic rock teetering monasteries of Meteora and one of the most visited archaeological sites of Greece, Delphi, which was considered by the ancient Greeks as the center of the world. The region also boasts some of the most beautiful trails in the country at the mountainous province of Epirus, and of course at Mt. Olympus which surely has a place, on the list of iconic mountains of the world.
Many of these places feel so untainted by tourism.
Come before everyone else does.
