Hike in Hydra

GENERAL INFO

With one of the most picturesque harbors in all of Greece, Hydra is the gem of the Saronic Gulf and one of those islands where time can easily stand still. The island was discovered in the 1950's and became a very fashionable hangout, which has inspired artists and writers including Arthur Miller and Leonard Cohen, who wrote two books here. The main town clusters around the marble-quay harbor where the beautiful captain mansions arrayed amphitheatrically are surrounded, by a village of stone houses and villas that rise up the hills. The real beauty of Hydra is the absence of motorized transport. That's right, no cars and no traffic. The only way to travel is on foot or by donkey and apart from the coast either side of Hydra Town, most of the island is wild and uninhabited and it does reward those prepared to go hiking.

DAILY ITINERARY

Hydra's proximity to Athens makes it an excellent day trip, as it takes only one and a half hour to reach the island. When you see Hydra's splendid 18th and 19th century stone mansions along the waterfront and on the steep streets above, you won't be surprised to learn that the island has been declared a national treasure by the Greek government and the council of Europe.
Further away from the charms of the harbor, Hydra's interior is a perfect mountain escape, where marked trails zig-zag across the terrain. Today we will take the path that leads up to Mountain Eros (588 meters), the island's highest point. We start hiking right from the port, and we will follow the "main street" leading to the area of Kala Pigadia. From there we will continue on the wide cobblestone street, which passes through a dense pine forest and eventually leads to the Monastery of Prophet Elias. Our final ascent continues towards the top of Mountain Eros, from where the views of the endless blue will reward you.
On our way back we will stop for a pic-nic lunch in the monastery and from there we will take the same route towards the town. Before taking the boat back to Athens, you will have free time to explore the charming town of Hydra with the distinctive architectural character and the elite atmosphere.
