Hydra's proximity to Athens makes it an excellent day trip, as it takes only one and a half hour to reach the island. When you see Hydra's splendid 18th and 19th century stone mansions along the waterfront and on the steep streets above, you won't be surprised to learn that the island has been declared a national treasure by the Greek government and the council of Europe.
Further away from the charms of the harbor, Hydra's interior is a perfect mountain escape, where marked trails zig-zag across the terrain. Today we will take the path that leads up to Mountain Eros (588 meters), the island's highest point. We start hiking right from the port, and we will follow the "main street" leading to the area of Kala Pigadia. From there we will continue on the wide cobblestone street, which passes through a dense pine forest and eventually leads to the Monastery of Prophet Elias. Our final ascent continues towards the top of Mountain Eros, from where the views of the endless blue will reward you.
On our way back we will stop for a pic-nic lunch in the monastery and from there we will take the same route towards the town. Before taking the boat back to Athens, you will have free time to explore the charming town of Hydra with the distinctive architectural character and the elite atmosphere.
