Georgia’s
Mestia to Ushguli Trail

Tucked between the soaring Caucasus Mountains and the shores of the Black Sea, Georgia is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. A country where ancient history meets wild landscapes and every meal feels like a celebration; Georgia is a dream for travelers seeking adventure off the beaten path. Though small in size, it packs a stunning variety of terrain—from lush wine valleys and vibrant cities to rugged alpine villages that feel lost in time.

1

What truly sets Georgia apart, though, is its spirit. The country’s rich culture, shaped by centuries of East-meets-West influence, is matched only by the warmth of its people. Georgians are famously hospitable—don’t be surprised if a local invites you in for homemade wine and a feast of khinkali and khachapuri.

2

While cities like Tbilisi and Batumi pulse with energy and charm, it’s in the mountains of Svaneti where Georgia reveals its raw, untamed beauty. Snow-capped peaks tower over medieval villages, and ancient footpaths lead hikers deep into landscapes that feel untouched by modern life. One of the best ways to experience this is on the four-day trek from Mestia to Ushguli—a journey that is wild, welcoming, and absolutely unforgettable.

3

We kicked off our hike from the lively mountain town of Mestia, following a trail that meandered through quiet forests, alpine meadows, and sleepy Svan villages. The scenery was a perfect blend of nature and tradition—ancient stone towers rising between wildflowers and wooden farmhouses. By late afternoon, we reached Zhabeshi, a charming hillside village where the pace of life feels wonderfully slow. Our guesthouse dinner was homemade and hearty—fresh bread, stews, and wine—setting the perfect tone for the days ahead.

4

The second day’s trail took us uphill through misty woods and open pastureland, gradually revealing breathtaking views of the Greater Caucasus. After several hours of steady walking, the remote village of Adishi came into view—stone houses clustered at the foot of towering peaks, seemingly untouched by time. There’s no cell service here—just silence, starlight, and the distant rumble of glacial rivers.

5

Day three was the most adventurous—and the most unforgettable. We started early to pass the icy Adishchala River, a brisk and beautiful wake-up call. From there, we climbed steadily toward Chkhunderi Pass, rewarded with panoramic views of glaciers, valleys, and jagged peaks all around. The descent was gentler, winding past wild rivers, alpine flowers, and shepherd huts until we reached Iprari, a peaceful village where we spent the night under a sky full of stars.

6

Our final day of hiking led us through highland trails, past weathered towers, ancient chapels, and wandering livestock. The path gradually unfolded beneath Mount Shkhara, Georgia’s highest peak, offering dramatic views at every turn. By early afternoon, we reached Ushguli—a UNESCO World Heritage village where stone houses and defensive towers stand against a backdrop of snow-dusted giants. It felt like we’d stepped into a living museum.

main

Hiking from Mestia to Ushguli wasn’t just a physical journey, it was a step back in time, a deep breath of fresh mountain air, and a powerful reminder of how much beauty still exists in the world’s remote corners. The trail connects more than villages; it connects people to nature, culture, and to a simpler way of life that feels increasingly rare. And when you finally arrive in Ushguli, surrounded by silence, peaks, and stone towers, you’ll understand why so many fall in love with this place. It’s not just a hike—it’s a story you’ll carry with you long after the trail ends.
