Hiking Italy's Dolomites

GENERAL INFO

The Dolomites mountains in the Italian Alps are a playground for outdoor adventurers, and they have been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site for their unique geology. The dolomitic limestone has been eroded by the elements over the millennia into towering pinnacles, vertical walls, and sheer cliffs, making it one of the most breathtaking mountain landscapes in the world.
We love the area so much, that we have developed this “Dolomites “Classic” Hike” tour to indulge our passion for the region. We meet at Treviso, and we drive towards the mountains and the enchanting village of San Candido which is going to be our base for the next four days. Known for its charming alpine character and stunning natural surroundings, it is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and travelers seeking a mix of adventure, history, and relaxation. The final three nights are in the stunning village of Cortina, celebrated for its awe-inspiring natural beauty and luxurious charm. This tour offers the perfect blend of invigorating hikes, cozy accommodations, and exquisite Italian cuisine paired with fine wine—a truly unbeatable combination!

The adventure ramps up today as we have our first hike.  It begins with a gentle ascent lasting about an hour, leading us to Rifugio Tre Scarperi, the perfect spot for a coffee and a slice of delicious strudel. Continuing upward, the trail winds through tranquil woods filled with larch trees, eventually reaching an elevation of 1750 meters. The path then meanders offering stunning views, as we make our way to Rifugio Baranci for lunch. Here, you will be treated to breathtaking vistas and a culinary highlight: Canederli—savory dumplings fried in butter and sage, then finished with a generous sprinkling of parmesan cheese. Simply mouthwatering!
After lunch, you’ll have several options for the descent: a scenic hike down to San Candido, a relaxing chair-lift ride to give your knees a break, or an exhilarating ride on the “Fun-Bob,” a wheeled bobsled that twists and turns down the hillside along a winding concrete track.

It’s easy to see why Cortina is celebrated as one of the most beautifully situated towns in the Italian Alps.
Our hike takes us from Cimabanche to Ra Stua, where we pause for another delectable lunch. From there, a minivan brings us directly to Cortina and for the next three nights, we’ll stay at the elegant four-star Park Hotel Franceschi (or a comparable alternative), a recently renovated historic hotel conveniently located just a short stroll from Cortina’s vibrant center.

Our trail begins by heading toward the striking triangular peak of Monte Cristallo and then descends along the northern slopes of Faloria through ancient larch forests and alpine pastures. Along the way, we will pass a traditional malga, where cheese is still crafted using methods handed down through generations. A highlight of the hike is a stop for lunch at Rifugio Mietres, a charming wooden chalet renowned for its outstanding cuisine and stunning views.
